Traversing down dirt roads into the wild and wonderful elements of the Carrizo Plain. Another couple of miles with the gear hiking up into the foothills to an abandoned ranch. Old barns, houses, and structures, along with Trees become a great refuge for wildlife in an otherwise pretty barren landscape. When I first arrived I had a few different barn owls and hawks fly directly over my head. I had a feeling that when morning came it’d be quite the show. This takes place at dawn, about an hour before sunrise. You’ll hear Western Kingbirds (these birds go on forever and are quite tough! I saw two picking on a Raven in mid-flight!). House Finches, a very close Mourning Dove, Collared Dove, Bullock’s Oriole, Ravens, quite a few others, and later on the Coyotes get in on the party.
